Heck, I just spent a week wading a western Alaska river with him and his son literally 3 weeks ago.
Gene’s wealth of integrity, connection to people and overall hope for humanity was like a shining star. For many years I would only spend a day or two a year with him as we did not have lodging packages. However, when we started offering overnight packages I was able to spend more time with him and the rest of the ‘Cowboys’ who are a group of friends that have fished together for 3 decades.
His command and appreciation of both the English and Spanish language was impressive and his use of it, delightful. His iconic readings of ‘The cremation of Sam McGee’ and ‘The shooting of Dan McGrew’
at the dinner table after a long day of fishing were always delivered articulately with a slight chuckle here and there. They will surely be missed, as will he. Lastly, he was such a genuine gentleman and he carried himself with such grace…..
