250 miles from the mega resorts in Cancun lies a protected remote wilderness area that is void of population, tourism and for the most part fishermen…This 1.3 million acre paradise is prime territory for bonefish, tarpon, and Snook. It also houses the World’s best Permit fishing. Espiritu Santo Bay is well known amongst saltwater anglers but due to the fact that only 7 boats have legal access to fish this vast expanse not many anglers ever have the chance or will have the chance to fish here.
After more than 15 years the owners of Paradise Lodge have upgraded by building a new lodge, Espiritu Santo Bay Lodge or ESB for short. The new lodge is much closer to the primetime fishing, less than 15 minutes, and much farther away from the few people that live in this remote part of Mexico. There are only 95 residents in the entire 1.3 Million acres of the biosphere / preserve and there are no eco-tours running all over your flats.
Joe Donsky has fished this area many times. He has seen more Permit caught here in fewer days of fishing by a long shot. Three times as many fish in half as many days. On Joe’s trips groups have averaged more than one Permit landed per day. The guides at ESB Lodge have been charting Permit caught, the numbers are astounding. 1.5 Permit landed per day. Permit fish’n is hard stuff and these are great numbers. On a trip of 6 anglers it is typical at other locations that you would expect to average a quarter to a half a fish per day for the group.
Most years Summer is the best fishing with lots of daylight, consistent water temperatures, and generally mild south east winds. The bonefish and permit are feasting on the flats with even fewer anglers on the water. Permit in this region are in their post spawning phase during August and September. Anglers post their highest success rates during these months.
Recent reports include: a twenty plus pound snook, Ricard K. released 3 Permit in one day, Tarpon are being jumped daily in the Cenotes / Lagoons, and the wade fishing for Bonefish on the hard sand flats has been excellent. Who doesn’t love Bonefish that rarely see fishermen or flies???
Please see the photos from our journeys in this area, including some from Brian O’Keefe’s most recent trip.
We hope you can breakaway from the crowds and become one of the few anglers that are able experience this remote paradise and some bad ass fish’n.
