YAKIMA, UPPER COLUMBIA, KLICKITAT AND ALASKA – 10/2/2026

YAKIMA

We all get use to tossing big dry flies and the Yakima is a great big dry fly river.  However,  remember most of a trout’s diet is ‘smaller stuff’.  Fishing a number 14-18 single dry is not a bad idea…..even while searching. Purple Haze, Parachute Adams, Royal Parachute, Hair Stackers etc etc… Are all good options.

This fall season is the far and fine of the Yakima.  Your nymphs as overall rule need to be in the # 16-20  sizes.  That’s not to say you cant catch fish on bigger nymphs, because you can.  But as we get in to the heart of Fall … Late Sept and October, the predominant  bug will be the Baetis and they tend to be LITTLE

Nymphs,
-> #16-20  Duracel, YB’s, Hares Ear,  nymphs, Walts Worm, RS’2, Baetis
-># 10-12  October Caddis Nymphs…Orange and Black Pats Stone

Dry Flies
#8-12  Crane fly Adults and October Caddis
#14-18 Purple Haze, Hair Stackers, Parachute Adams
#8-12 Hoppers

KLICKITAT

Pretty DANG good season so far on the Klickitat….Especially with the low counts over Bonneville.

We have been utilizing both nymph and swing tactics and meeting with good success.  The river is currently cycling with anywhere between 18-28 inches of visibility depending on time and zone.  Cooler weather is 5 days a way of so and will create a better clarity factor.

When the clarity is less, remember those fish will feel more comfortable in the shallows… often the water that people walk into.

UPPER COLUMBIA

We have been mixing it up on the Upper Columbia this fall.  The sturgeon fishing has been PDG.  Unfortunately we have not been able to get them on the surface, but oh well:))

The trout game has been sporadic.  Recently the late afternoon into the evening has certainly been the better time frame and the dry fly really has been the best technique, followed by a swung fly and then the nymph.

ALASKA

As per usual, this fishery never ceases to amaze me… No complaints. World class trout on the swing 100%
