YAKIMA
We are in the FLIP FLOP.
Explanation – Starting somewhere around the 25th of August the river starts to drop in flows and by the 10th of Sept the Yakima river will be at a low level for the remainder of the season. The lower Yakima river from the city of Yakima to the Tri cities will then get its water from The Naches system. Hence the flip flop. The Upper Yakima dropping and the Naches system increasing.
River is in great condition and we are not worried about hoot-owl anymore. Water temps are ranging from 58-64 depending on where you are and time of day.
This fall season is the far and fine of the Yakima. Your nymphs as overall rule need to be in the # 16-20 sizes. That’s not to say you cant catch fish on bigger nymphs, because you can. But as we get in to the heart of Fall … Late Sept and October, the predominant bug will be the Baetis and they tend to be LITTLE

Current Salmon counts into the river number about 1500; which is a low count. I mention this because the end of Sept can be very good fishing, kind of Alaska style, behind the spawning Salmon…specifically in the Upper River. Teanaway confluence upstream.

The river is in spectacular condition. There is a bit of a cycle but with this cooler weather the cycle is LIGHT. The fishing and the catching has been pretty dang good. Both nymphing and swing tactics have produced.
